DSC 410/510 - Multivariate Statistical Methods
Assignment 1 (deadline: 4pm on Monday, October 4)
Practical matters
Make sure your LCB network account
in the Business Technology Center is active.
Download the "hatco.xls" Excel spreadsheet on the data page and work through slides 4-7
of "Examining Your Data" (available on the handouts page) using these data.
Send an e-mail to ipardoe at lcbmail.uoregon.edu
with a Microsoft Word attachment with answers to the following
questions:
Before looking at the data, what sort of relationship
might you expect there to be between the variables x4 and x6?
(Hint: read the textbook to find out what the variables
measure.)
Use SAS Analyst to construct a scatterplot with x4 on the
vertical axis (y) and x6 on the horizontal axis (x). Use the following
guidelines:
In SAS, select Graphs > Scatter Plot > Two-Dimensional to
construct the plot
In SAS, select Edit > Copy Graph to copy the plot
In Word, select Edit > Paste to paste the plot
Interpret the results of a simple linear regression analysis with x4 as
the response or dependent variable (y) and x6 as the predictor or
explanatory variable (x). Use the following guidelines:
In SAS, select Statistics > Regression > Simple to run
the analysis
In SAS, select Edit > Copy to Program Editor and then Edit >
Select All and then Edit > Copy to copy the output
In Word, select Edit > Paste to paste the output (you
may need to increase the margins so the output fits on the page)
Reading
Chapters 1 and 2 in the text-book, pages 1-86.
Review questions
Usually, I will suggest questions you can do to review material; these
will usually be questions from the text-book. We may discuss some of
the questions in class on Tuesday, October 5, and I will also provide
suggested solutions to allow you to check your answers.
